History

The Spagnoletti Zeuli family’s love for the earth has ancient roots.

Documents conserved in the family archive dating back nearly four hundred years testify to its oxvner-ship of the lands surrounding Castel del Monte, the imposing octagonal castello that towers majestically over the Andrian countryside. Built in the 13th century under Frederick II of Sxuabia, by the 17th century its administration rested xoith Sebastiano Spagnoletti, Castel del Monte’s last lord.

The history of the family, which counts illustrious legislators and churchmen among its members, coincides with the history of the events and undertakings that have patiently transfor¬med what was once a Mediterranean wilderness into lush and prosperous farmland. We are in the southern¬most part of the Italian peninsula, Puglia, the toe of the “boot”, overlooking the sea sailed by Ulysses.

It was to these shores, centuries prior to the daivn of the Christian era, that his fellow Greeks brought not only their civiliza¬tion, but their expertise in wine and olive oil cultivation. The olive tree has always been the symbol of this land, xuhich in turn has always been the principal producer of Extra Virgin Olive Oil in Italy, if not the xvorld.

It is in the heart of this countryside that Onofrio Spagnoletti Zeuli, Count of Andria, combines traditional wisdom with entrepreunerial drive and investments in modern technology and research. In this way, he perpetuates the legacy of a family whose centuries-old relationship with the olive and the grape can only be described as one of genuine veneration.
