Troia and Montepulciano grapes, typical of our area, combined with Aglianico grapes, grown on a fertile hilly land facing south, in a favorable microclimate, gives rise to a wine of intense ruby color, impenetrable and complex on the nose, with flavour of large fruit jam and cherries, supported by hints of vanilla and cocoa wood aging. The taste is persistent and large, very pleasant-based sweet tannins, well integrated into the complexity of the wine. Served at a temperature of 18 ° C. reveals a wide range of match, but especially in homemade pasta with sauces based on meat, or grilled and braised.
San Domenico and Zagaria, the two estates of the Azienda Agricola Conte Spagnoletti Zeuli, occupy about 1,000 acres in the countryside of Andria, in northern part of the province of Bari.
While most of the land is dedicated to olive groves, the slopes of the outlying hills are planted with rows of Nero di Troia, Montepulciano, Aglianico e Bombino Nero, native grapes from which Castel del Monte, glory of the local wine culture, is born.
Blessed by calcareous soil and a dry, mild climate, warmed by the sun even in the winter, this is ideal olive country. The trees themselves are cultivated in accordance with the socalled “Barese chalice ” method, each plant from 9 to 15 feet in height and hollowed out at the center, as dictated by centuries of local tradition.
The farm cultivates the Coratina variety, pride of the northern part of Bari province, which, thanks to expert processing techniques, give to the olive oil an exceptional richness and density, as well as excellent organoleptic qualities such as flavor, fragrance and color.
All of the groves are outfitted with drip irrigation systems capable of providing each plant with up to 4 gallons of water per hour.
The Spagnoletti Zeuli family’s love for the earth has ancient roots.
It is in the heart of this countryside that Onofrio Spagnoletti Zeuli, Count of Andria, combines traditional wisdom with entrepreunerial drive and investments in modern technology and research. In this way, he perpetuates the legacy of a family whose centuries-old relationship with the olive and the grape can only be described as one of genuine veneration.
Today the farm “Conte Spagnoletti Zeuli” produces DOCG and DOC wines like “Castel del Monte” (Nero di Troia, Montepulciano, Aglianico, Bombino Nero, Bombino Bianco and Pampanuto etc.) and IGT Murgia (FIANO), extra virgin olive oil DOP “Terra di Bari” sub the famous location of “Castel del Monte”, we produce only extra virgin olive oil of 100% Italian olive.
